An engagement session in Hatcher Pass? Sign me up! Especially on a lovely cloudy August day like this when the mountains are green and the wildflowers are abundant.
I met up with Kyla and Matthew on a gorgeous day at the beginning of blueberry-picking season for their Hatcher Pass engagement session. Late summer in Alaska is truly magical. The hills are lush and vibrant, wildflowers are scattered across the alpine tundra, and the weather has just a hint of crispness in the air that makes you want to stay outside all day.
From the moment we met up, it felt like the perfect adventure session. We wandered through fields of wildflowers and green grass, laughing and exploring while capturing some of the sweetest moments between the two of them. One of my favorite things about engagement sessions like this is that they feel less like a photoshoot and more like a mini date in the mountains.
After some time exploring the open meadows, Kyla and Matthew changed outfits and we headed over to Summit Lake. Sitting at over 3,800 feet, Summit Lake always has that cool alpine breeze even in August.
We spent some time walking along the shoreline and exploring before Kyla and Matthew popped a bottle of champagne. Champagne photos are always some of my favorites! They’re playful, a little messy, and such a fun way to celebrate this exciting season of life together. It was the perfect way to wrap up their Hatcher Pass engagement session.
Kyla and Matthew are getting married this year and I am so excited for their wedding day! If their engagement session was any indication, their wedding is going to be full of joy, laughter, and so much love.
Hatcher Pass is a scenic mountain pass located in the beautiful Talkeetna Mountains about an hour and a half north of Anchorage.
It’s one of Alaska’s most breathtaking alpine destinations and a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. In the summer, the mountains turn bright green and the landscape fills with wildflowers, making it an incredible place for hiking, exploring, and photography. In late summer and early fall, the hills are covered in blueberries, which is why you’ll often see people wandering around with buckets during berry-picking season.
Hatcher Pass is also home to the historic Independence Mine State Historical Park, a fascinating historic mining area that adds unique character and stunning mountain views to the landscape.
Throughout the year, Hatcher Pass offers a wide range of outdoor adventures including:
It’s truly a must-see destination in Alaska.
One of the biggest reasons couples choose a Hatcher Pass engagement session is the scenery. The sweeping mountain views, rolling alpine tundra, and dramatic skies make an unforgettable backdrop for photos.
No matter where you turn, the views are stunning.
If you’re planning an engagement session in July or August, the wildflowers are absolutely breathtaking. The meadows fill with colorful blooms, creating a dreamy and romantic setting that feels straight out of a storybook.
Another reason I love photographing engagement sessions here is the variety of locations. Within a short drive you can find:
This variety makes it easy to create a gallery that feels diverse and adventurous.
If you and your partner love hiking, exploring, or spending time outdoors, a Hatcher Pass engagement session is the perfect way to celebrate your relationship. Instead of standing in one place for photos, you can explore together, enjoy the scenery, and create memories along the way.
For couples who want engagement photos that truly feel like Alaska, Hatcher Pass is one of the best locations you can choose. The dramatic mountains, wide open landscapes, and changing weather create images that feel wild, romantic, and timeless.
If you’re dreaming of your own Hatcher Pass engagement session, I would absolutely love to help you plan it. From choosing the best time of year to finding the most beautiful hidden spots, it’s one of my favorite places in Alaska to photograph couples.
And if Kyla and Matthew’s session proved anything, it’s that a little mountain adventure, a bottle of champagne, and the person you love most is the perfect recipe for unforgettable engagement photos.
