Hannah and Dayton’s Whispering Oaks elopement in the La Sals in Moab, Utah was the kind of day that perfectly blended adventure, love, and breathtaking landscapes. September in Moab is always special, but this day felt especially magical from beginning to end.
These two are passionate rock climbers (it’s actually how they first met) so it only made sense that their wedding day would include the activity that brought them together. From climbing in their wedding attire to exchanging vows beneath the towering La Sal Mountains, their day was filled with meaningful moments that truly reflected who they are.
We started the day in the iconic red rocks just outside of Moab. The desert was glowing with that warm September light as Hannah and Dayton shared their first look, but they weren’t alone.
Their two dogs, Leeto and Ember, were right there with them, making the moment even more special. Watching the four of them together in the red rock landscape felt like the perfect way to begin the day.
Because Hannah and Dayton are avid climbers, they had one very important wedding-day activity planned: bouldering in Moab.
And yes, they climbed in their wedding clothes.
We stopped at one of Moab’s popular bouldering spots where the two of them laced up their climbing shoes and got on the rock. It was such a fun moment to document. Seeing them laugh, cheer each other on, and move naturally on the rock face made it obvious how much climbing is a part of their relationship.
This is one of my favorite things about elopements: couples can truly design their day around what they love. Whether that’s hiking, skiing, climbing, or simply exploring a favorite place together, incorporating meaningful activities makes the experience so much more personal.
Hannah and Dayton climbing together on their wedding day felt authentic and unforgettable.
After their climbing adventure, we spent some time exploring more of the desert landscape around Moab.
The contrast of Hannah’s dress against the red sandstone and Dayton’s suit against the sweeping desert views created some truly stunning portraits. September weather in Moab is often perfect, warm but comfortable, and that day delivered exactly that.
The desert light was soft and golden, and every direction offered another incredible backdrop.
From the desert floor, we made our way up into the mountains for their ceremony at Whispering Oaks Lodge. The drive into the La Sal Mountains always feels like entering a completely different world. Within a short time you go from red rock desert to alpine forests and mountain views.
Whispering Oaks Lodge sits tucked into the mountains with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, making it an incredible place for an intimate wedding.
Hannah and Dayton chose to celebrate their day surrounded by their closest family and friends, keeping the focus on connection and shared memories. Their ceremony took place outside on the property with the towering presence of Mount Peale in the distance, the highest peak in the La Sals.
After the ceremony, everyone gathered together for family photos and some well-deserved celebration.
Instead of a formal reception, Hannah and Dayton opted for something simple and fun: pizza with their favorite people. It was the perfect laid-back way to celebrate after such an adventurous day.
There’s something really special about these intimate elopement gatherings. Without the pressure of a large traditional wedding timeline, couples can slow down and genuinely enjoy time with their loved ones.
As the day came to a close, we headed back out to catch the last light of the evening.
Golden hour in the Moab desert is always incredible, and this sunset absolutely delivered. The sky softened into warm oranges and pinks while the desert landscape glowed around us.
Hannah and Dayton wandered through the red rocks together, soaking in the final moments of their wedding day. After a day filled with climbing, laughter, family, and beautiful scenery, the sunset portraits felt like the perfect ending.
Hannah and Dayton’s Whispering Oaks elopement in Moab was the perfect example of how meaningful and unique an elopement can be. By incorporating climbing, including their dogs, and choosing stunning locations from the desert to the mountains, they created a wedding day that truly reflected their story.
From the red rocks of Moab to the alpine beauty of the La Sal Mountains, every moment felt intentional, adventurous, and full of love.
And honestly watching a couple boulder in their wedding clothes might just be one of my favorite wedding-day memories ever.
