If you’re dreaming of an Alaska elopement that feels adventurous, intentional, and completely unlike a traditional wedding day, Alyssa and Tim’s Matanuska Glacier elopement is one you’re going to want to see.
Coming all the way from Minnesota, Alyssa and Tim knew they wanted to do something different for their wedding. Instead of a big traditional celebration, they wanted to spend their wedding day intentionally together, exploring some of Alaska’s incredible landscapes and creating an experience they would never forget. And honestly? They absolutely nailed it.
We started their wedding day at Sheep Mountain Lodge, one of the cutest places to stay near Matanuska Glacier. Nestled in the mountains with incredible views, it was the perfect cozy starting point for their Alaska elopement. And I have to mention the breakfast because it deserves its own paragraph: you HAVE to get the pancakes at Sheep Mountain Lodge. Trust me.
Alyssa and Tim decided to get ready together, but they still wanted to have that special first look moment. So while Alyssa finished getting dressed, I brought Tim outside and had him wait for his bride-to-be. Then came the first look. They got to see each other for the first time on their wedding day surrounded by the mountains, and we spent some time taking portraits around the lodge afterward. Sheep Mountain Lodge is such a beautiful location for photos, especially with the unique colors and rugged landscape of Gunsight Mountain in the distance.
Then it was time for the main event: helicopter!
This was actually my first time taking a helicopter to Matanuska Glacier, and I was completely blown away by the experience. Seeing the glacier and surrounding Alaska landscape from above was absolutely incredible.
If you’re considering a helicopter elopement in Alaska, this is such a fun way to turn the journey itself into part of your wedding-day experience. Instead of simply driving to a ceremony location, the adventure begins the moment you take off. And the views? Unreal.
Once we arrived at Matanuska Glacier, Alyssa and Tim had their sweet, intimate wedding ceremony surrounded by one of Alaska’s most iconic landscapes.
There was something so special about watching these two exchange vows in such a wild and beautiful place. Their wedding day wasn’t about putting on a production for a crowd. It was about the two of them, their commitment to each other, and getting to experience something unforgettable together. After their ceremony, we explored the glacier and spent time taking photos throughout the landscape. We photographed around the glacier and even captured some incredible images with the helicopter.
This is one of the things I love most about Alaska elopements: there are so many opportunities to turn your wedding portraits into an adventure.
After our time on the glacier, we hopped back into the helicopter and headed back toward the lodge.
Once we were back, Alyssa and Tim enjoyed a little snack and had their cake-cutting moment. It was such a sweet way to slow down and celebrate after a morning full of adventure. But we weren’t done yet.
We packed up and headed to our final location of the day: a beautiful lake tucked along the side of the road. And this is one of those moments where you just have to love Alaska. The lake wasn’t some elaborate, private venue. It was simply a stop along the road—and it was stunning. Alaska has a funny way of making even the most unexpected roadside stops feel like they belong in a wedding magazine.
As if a helicopter ride and glacier ceremony weren’t enough, Alyssa and Tim also got to experience some incredible Alaska wildlife during their wedding day.
We saw moose, black bears, and bald eagles!
I mean… could you ask for a more Alaskan wedding day?
Their Matanuska Glacier elopement was the perfect combination of adventure, intimacy, and intentional time together. From a cozy morning at Sheep Mountain Lodge to flying over the mountains in a helicopter, exchanging vows on a glacier, cutting their cake, and ending the day beside a beautiful Alaska lake, every part of their wedding felt uniquely them.
If Alyssa and Tim’s wedding day has you dreaming about your own Alaska elopement, Matanuska Glacier is an incredible place to consider.
An elopement here can be so much more than simply showing up, saying your vows, and taking a few photos. You can build an entire experience around your wedding day—whether that’s getting ready together at a cozy Alaska lodge, taking a helicopter to the glacier, exploring the landscape, enjoying a picnic or cake afterward, or ending the day somewhere completely unexpected.
Your wedding day can be an adventure from beginning to end.
And if there’s one thing Alyssa and Tim’s day reminded me of, it’s that you don’t need a traditional wedding to have an unforgettable one. Sometimes the best wedding days are the ones where you get to slow down, explore somewhere beautiful, and simply spend the day with the person you love most.
Alaska is pretty incredible, too.
